Ilhabela, the biggest ocean island of Brazil, is situated in the north shore
of Sao Paulo State at only 210 km from Sao Paulo city, 400 Km from Rio de Janeiro
city, and less than 200 km from Sao Paulo International Airport, Guarulhos.
Modern highways and routes trough the See Mountains (Serra do Mar) takes you
safety to Sao Sebastian where ferryboats, that transport cars and busses, complete
the way to the island in twenty minutes. Also helicopters and yachts are often
used to make the journey.
In 1997, just about 85% of the Archipelago of Ilhabela (130 square miles of
area all together, and about 84 miles of coast line) was transformed into a
State Park by the Government of Sao Paulo and declared a Biospheric Reserve
by UNESCO. Today, Ilhabela is home of one of the last virgin reserves of Atlantic
Rain Forest (Mata Atlantica), with more than 300 waterfalls and more than 30
beaches, the best of which are on the southern part of the island, exactly where
Ilhasol Hotel Pousada is located.
Ilhabela is one of most preferred tourist destination of the high-medium Brazilian
class people and, since it is an island, has one of the lowest crime rates in
the State of Sao Paulo, which guarantees its visitors a comfortable, safe and
relaxing stay.
Throughout its history, Ilhabela’s name has changed, it witnessed battles,
welcomed visitors and ended up being inhabited by Portuguese settlers, pirates,
slaves and caiçaras (island natives). An infinity of stories and legends
give the island a unique and unforgettable personality.
